This is especially true compared to closed-circuit cameras. There are steps that can be done for extra security, though. Encryption and other security measures block all but the most determined hacking efforts. For almost all purposes the security of IP cameras is enough. First, an encoder takes the images from the IP camera and transmits them in readable form to a video hosting service such as DaCast. The second step is to take that video from the service and post it on a web page through embedding it from a video player. The encoding step is necessary because the default protocol IP cameras, called Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), is designed for network use. RTSP is not designed for video streaming over the web. That is, it’s designed for streaming between a server and end use devices. RTSP is a good protocol for many purposes, but it doesn’t support embedding live streaming video in web pages.

Because of this, other software tools are needed employing other protocols. The most popular live streaming protocol, and what DaCast uses, is (RTMP). Encoding alternatives Not all encoders work well for live video streaming to a web page from an IP camera, even when they are designed with web pages in mind.

For example, Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder, which has the advantage of being free, is not compatible with IP cameras. Pro is a great encoding product for use in that middleman step that allows streaming live video from IP cameras. The encoder supports a good array of popular and well-made IP video cameras and microphones. Furthermore, it works on either PC or Mac operating platforms. All versions of Wirecast also support live camera switching and many production functions. All of this fits with the way that IP cameras are normally used, which involves more than one camera capturing more than one point of view or more than one scene. With Wirecast you can then switch back and forth between cameras and integrate all of them into a coherent video stream.

Other software can be found on the market for this purpose, such as VidblasterX. VidblasterX is cheaper than Wirecast and has some of the same functionality. However, it does not support the Mac platform, making it a bit more limited in application. Also has the ability to pick up IP camera signals and broadcast to DaCast.

Like VidblasterX, the encoder is cheaper than Wirecast, but is different in that it is available for both Mac and PC. Do You Need IP Cameras?

The answer to this question will of course depend on what you are doing in the way of video streaming. The big difference between an IP camera and a webcam is that the webcam depends on a dedicated computer to connect to the Internet.

The IP camera has its own built-in Internet capacity (including its own IP address). Furthermore, it doesn’t require a dedicated computer.

This makes the IP camera more flexible in terms of when, where, and how it can be installed and used. They are and vastly more convenient to mount and position as well. The latter might be your deciding factor in if an IP camera is right for you. If you are finding a webcam too restricting in positioning, it might be time to pursue an IP camera. IP cameras also can have higher picture quality than webcams. They also include their own internal memory storage rather than depending on external storage.
