Actually, strictly speaking Lilypond would be the most accessible option for music notation on the mac, since the entire interface is just entering text in a text editor. It's definitely more tedious than something with a more sophisticated UI, and requires a good understanding of music and ability to really visualize the score, but in terms of an accessible way to produce high-quality, attractive musical scores, it's the best option I've encountered. I assume Sibelius is inaccessible, because as I understand the interface is largely graphical in nature, based on dragging note heads onto the staff, and there wouldn't be any way to do this with VO. Lilypond is a text-based music editor, so everything that will appear in the score is defined by typing it into a text file using a specialized syntax. Then Lilypond can compile that text file into a musical score.

From what I've heard, the results are very consistent and look good, so long as you haven't made any mistakes in your input - though the program does provide an error report if there's something amiss in your input such as failing to indicate where a slur should end, or so on. The program can also compile a.midi file from your score, which is helpful for listening to what you've written and making sure that it's coming out the way you expect. I can't count the number of times I've accidentally had things in the wrong octave, and caught it from listening to the midi. Regarding Logic, some quick Googling does seem to indicate that it can generate a score, though this certainly doesn't seem to be the primary function, so I'm not sure ho trustworthy the results would be, or how streamlined the process would be.

Agreed that Lilypond can be pretty complex and tedious, especially if working with more complex scores. (Scoring piano parts in Lilypond makes me want to cry). But to date I haven't found a better alternative. I'm intrigued by the possibility of printing scores in Logic, though I'm curious about how to actually edit note values, etc.? In my experience, you don't want to generate a score just from something recorded with a hardware keyboard, because often if your rhythm is a tiny bit off, that will be represented in the score.

So there'd still need to be a way to interact with the score and make sure everything is doing what you want. Can this be done in Logic?.

If you deploy Sibelius in your environment, you may or may not have a Sibelius Licence Server to manage the checking in and out of your licenses. From personal experience, it’s immensely helpful in terms of license management – only having licenses in use when machines are actively running the software-, managing license upgrades, as well as managing deployments. While not every environment is the same, if you happen to have standalone Sibelius licenses instead of a multi-seat network license, I would highly recommend it. This post covers the process of setting up a Sibelius License Server and deploying Sibelius to your Macs. I obviously don’t know your network, so there may be some “gotchas” on that side of things that will require working with your Network Admin to get this working. The component of this deployment that I found recently some folks were missing (and we missed initially as well) was the local LicenceServerInfo file.

We’ve opted to run our various license servers on a single Mac mini, but whatever makes sense for you and your environment. Sibelius looks for this on launch, and if found will attempt to communicate and check out a license.

The full path to the file is below: /Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius/manuscript/LicenceServerInfo The file itself is nothing special. It should contain a single line with the IP address or hostname of your Sibelius Licence Server. It should have an owner and group of root:admin with 755 permissions, just like all of its parent folders. You can choose to either script the creation of the file, it’s contents, and parent folders, or just make an installer with the file and folders.

If all is configured correctly, launching Sibelius for the first time will indicate it’s using a network license with small text at the bottom left corner of the launch window. So long as your license is up-to-date, you can remotely push Sibelius PKG installers to your deployed Macs and they will still refer to your Sibelius Licence Server for checking out licenses.

And whenever you purchase your annual license support renewal, you can deactivate your current license in the Avid Application Manager on your server and add the new one. Any of your already deployed Macs, regardless of the version they’re on, will continue to check out licenses from the server.
