The Roundtable Series is a development workshop focused on public readings of plays in progress. Each session is dedicated to presenting and discussing a single full-length or longer one-act piece.
The readings can be seated or staged, are free to attend, and are open to the public as well as the playwriting community. The goal of each gathering is to provide the designated playwright with focused, insightful feedback. The Roundtable Series is an open workshop for all playwrights from Northeast Ohio. This workshop will help writers develop and extend skills in creating dialogue for a variety of genres including fiction, drama, and memoir. The course will include readings as well as writing exercises intended to deepen an understanding of the human voice, and craft compelling, nuanced stories from the spoken word.
In our attempt to understand dialogue, the class will examine and create examples from the quotidian to the fantastic. The course will offer participants an opportunity to workshop a selection from a work in process, or create something new. All proceeds benefit The Hue Jackson Foundation, which supports efforts to combat Human Trafficking in Cleveland. In this workshop, we will explore the intersection between poetry and song lyrics. From Scottish Border Ballads to the blues to raps, we will put our words to music across multiple genres. What makes a good poem—imagery, narrative, concision — are the same techniques in writing good song lyrics.
You do not need to be a musician for this workshop. Kevin Richards from Roots of American Music is well versed in Americana and will provide the tunes. Ray McNiece will lead the writing component and play along as well.
You can try out your songs at the monthly Tongue in Groove Poetry Music Jam at the Fillmore. For over 25 years, communities have used Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) as a strength-based approach to change. ABCD builds community from the inside out as residents become producers rather than needy people seeking services. Learn the power of asset mapping, a fundamental tool that discovers the gifts of individuals, the power of networks and associations, and local organizations that are then leveraged to create change. Time Banking is an example of an asset-based approach that builds community and improves the quality of life while promoting the free exchange of talent and work. This training will be led by Dr.
Mark Chupp, Director, Community Innovation Network at Case Western and ABCD Institute Faculty member, and Indigo Bishop, ACBD Institute Fellow. NOTE: This is a 2-day training, beginning at 8:30a.m. And ending at 4:30 p.m. Both November 2nd and November 3rd 2017! Onstage November 2-5, 2017.

A 19-year partnership between the two organizations, the project introduces theatre arts to formerly homeless men recovering from substance abuse and mental health challenges. GOLDEN is a compelling original play exploring the cost of greed, the calling of friendship, and how stories shape our existence and connect us to our humanity. FREE, donations accepted. Established in 1984 and added to with spectacular acquisitions every year since, the Ursuline College Historic Costume Study Collection includes more than 3,500 pieces of 20th century American apparel and accessories. The collection – dubbed The Best Closet in Cleveland – is used as a study tool in the College’s fashion programs.

Arts Advocacy Days is a two-day event bringing representatives from the Ohio Arts Council and the Ohio Citizens for the Arts to Oberlin’s campus! Two public sessions will take place with each organization where students and community members can learn about arts funding in the United States, local and national resources for artists, and arts advocacy training. For this first session, we will be joined by Justin Nigro from the Ohio Arts Council, who will present a workshop about arts funding in the United States, including specific programming and resources from the Ohio Arts Council and information about other state arts councils’.
This session will cover national arts issues and policy, as well as time for discussion and Q&A with Justin. Pizza will be provided! Enjoy an amazing and mysterious evening in an interactive murder mystery called 'The Fatal Fifties Affair' by Eileen Moushey. There will be a delicious buffet with a non-alcoholic beverage and a dessert bar. A cash bar is also available.
There will be a 50's Costume Contest, Prizes, as well as a Basket Raffle. This year's Basket Raffle will benefit the Company On Stage Community Theatre in Houston, Texas. For this second public session, we will be joined by Bill Behrendt, Executive Director for the Ohio Citizens for the Arts. This session will continue the conversation through a workshop outlining arts advocacy issues and action steps that can be taken to advocate for the arts. Pizza will be provided!
Attention All High School Female Students: Please join in November 11, 2017 for a FREE conference hosted by the International Women’s Air & Space Museum (IWASM) located inside Burke Lakefront Airport. The Wings of Women (WOW) conference is geared towards high school female students interested in pursuing STEM career fields.
The IWASM brings in professional women mentors from various STEM fields, who spend the day speaking with the students about how they got to where they are today. There are also hands-on activities that go along with each of these fields to help spark further interest.
This is a great opportunity for young ladies to be inspired and empowered to pursue whatever their hearts desire. Upon arrival, a light breakfast will be available and lunch will be provided later in the day. Upon departure, each student will receive a bag of information from various colleges and universities about their select STEM fields.
Applications are required for each student wishing to attend. The deadline for applications is November 1, 2017 along with a $5 reservation fee.

The book has been selected for the NEA’s Big Read 2017 program and provides a unique opportunity for the community to speculate on the power of speculative fiction. Join us at Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern where local sci-fi writers Charlie Oberndorf, Marie Vibbert, and Mike Substelny will discuss Station Eleven, read from their own work, debate the power of science fiction, and offer tips for how to craft a compelling sci-fi story.
Center for Arts-Inspired Learning (CAL) will conclude the NEA Big Read in Cleveland with a culminating celebration of Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel on November 16, 2017 at 10am. The culminating event will feature a panel discussion on emergency preparedness in Cuyahoga County, artwork and creative writing from Big Read participants, and a “Museum of Civilization” inspired by the book. Additionally, Ohio Shakespeare Festival will present a short scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Cleveland Neighborhood Progress will be on hand with sample emergency kits and share tips for building your own. The inaugural Artist-In-Residence for the Gordon Square Arts District, John G, has spent his adult life obsessed with the language of Comics. Compelled by the idea of using words and pictures, arranged to maximum effect, John G has created and published a long list of comics that range from rust-belt horror to personal, autobiographical deep dives.
Simultaneously, he’s spent his adult life paralyzed below his upper chest, using a wheelchair to navigate the world. For the past seven years, that world has revolved around the Gordon Square Arts District on the West Side of Cleveland. In TALES TO DEMYSTIFY, John G takes both of these aspects of his life and addresses accessibility and disability head-on, creating and publishing a comic book made up of short stories dialed-in on the particular neighborhood known as Gordon Square. Most upright people have little to no experience with the reality of everyday wheelchair users. The objective of this comic is to expose people to what it’s like to live in a wheelchair, and relieve the anxiety that comes from confronting something that they don’t understand yet. The TALES TO DEMYSTIFY exhibit will include the original artwork from the comic, as well as prints and copies of the issue. Meet John G and get answers to the hard questions in person!
TALES TO DEMYSTIFY will be on display in the Gordon Square Art Space through December 2, 2017. The novella is back! For those readers who relish a good read, like following characters over time, and want to build a relationship with their favorite authors, this retro style is perfect. Serial fiction provides an affordable read that a person can digest on a subway train, or in a night or two, without committing to a long book. For folks with e-readers, these compact stories cost a pittance at 99 cents to about three dollars, making it easy to try new authors. This craft talk will cover the basics of writing serial fiction, including business opportunities for authors. The Festival of Trees is back and better than ever before!
